Trees Atlanta is a nonprofit community group that protects and improves Atlanta’s urban forest by planting, conserving, and educating. Since its beginnings, Trees Atlanta’s goals have been to plant new trees, conserve existing trees, replace trees lost to development and hazards, and educate the public on the many benefits of trees. Trees Atlanta has become one of the most widely known and respected non-profits locally, as well as nationally, for their work as stewards of our urban environment. To date, Trees Atlanta has planted and cared for over 140,000 trees in metro Atlanta.
Our Downtown Planting program focuses on project coordination of planting and maintaining large trees (2.5” caliper and above) in Downtown Atlanta in order to fulfill the Downtown Master Plan. The Downtown Planting Team’s schedule adheres to two annual cycles:
Planting Season (November through March), in which the Downtown Planting Supervisor oversees multiple crews and/or supervises contractors in installing trees to ANSI, ISA, and Trees Atlanta standards.
Maintenance Season (April through October), which is focused on hand watering, mulching, pruning, pesticide application and other elements of tree care for the previous season's plantings.
Job Description
The Downtown Planting Supervisor will:
- Supervise and evaluate installation and maintenance work completed by the Downtown Planting Team and hired contractors in coordination with the Downtown Planting Manager.
- Ensure Downtown Planting crew and hired contractors are prepared for daily tasks, remain focused on planting standards and safety throughout the workday.
- Streamline communications between crews, contractors, and management
- Lead teams with positivity and flexibility to ensure a productive and high-morale workplace
- Fulfill tasks (with crew, volunteers, if necessary) as outlined to fulfill the Atlanta Downtown Improvement District (ADID) contract
- On an ongoing basis works with Downtown Planting Manager to hone and optimize ArcGIS's utility as a Tree Database. Primarily used for tracking Program metrics like tree numbers, tree status, and maintenance visits. Tree well statuses are also tracked and updated through the same processes.
- Follow planting plans, designs, schedules, and instructions provided by the Downtown Planting Manager, and communicate those instructions to the Downtown Planting crew and hired contractors.
- Purchase materials and submit internal financial documentation for payment of invoices in a timely manner, as required.
- Oversees and coordinates the planting of ball and burlap, as well as container-grown, trees of a variety of sizes, utilizing tools such as, but not limited to, shovels, pickaxes, mattocks, rock bars, wheelbarrows, ball carts, and rakes.
- Perform tree care and maintenance as needed, including but not limited to watering, mulching, pruning, staking, sign installation, and underplanting with shrubs, insecticide application, reconstructing tree berms, patching erosion, weeding tree wells, inspecting, and evaluating tree health.
- Operate specialized equipment (trucks, trailers, skidsteer, water tanks, pumps,etc.) in a safe manner.
- Training new and existing Downtown Planting crew members in all aspects of the program, prioritizing safety standards at all times
- Liaise with the public as a responsible ambassador to communicate the mission for Trees Atlanta while working in the field. Contacting and building relationships with property owners and community stakeholders to facilitate tree planting downtown.
- Complete assigned weekly work and tree data reports, including recording ADID work hours for monthly submission, truck checks, inventory checks, equipment inspections, adding/updating tree points in ArcGIS, and crew timesheets.
- Ensure all work is completed in a timely manner and within the budget.
- Use Google Workspace to stay on-task, organized, and communicate within the organization and with work-related outside contacts.
Qualification Requirements
- 2 years of related work experience OR Bachelor's degree in fields of Landscape Architecture, Forestry, Horticulture, Botany or related degree with 1 year of related work experience. A degree is not necessary to do this job but a passion for arboriculture, horticulture, conservation, urban ecology or community improvement are all desirable.
- A minimum of 6 months of experience operating heavy equipment on an active construction site.
- At least 1 year of prior experience supervising staff or subcontractors.
- A valid driver's license with a clean record, and ability to pass a DOT physical.
- Outstanding interpersonal communication, and problem-solving skills and ability to effectively supervise other employees.
- Ability to drive a truck with trailer and train your team to safely drive trucks, trailers, and other machinery.
- Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships both inside and outside the organization
- Highly motivated, organized, and detail-oriented.
- Experience reading and interpreting landscape and construction drawings.
- Knowledgeable in the best practices of the planting and care of trees and other ornamental plants. Prior experience with plant and tree installation.
- Demonstrate a respect and understanding of safety or risk management for and around heavy machinery and construction sites, as well as health and safety standards for the crew.
- Excellent computer skills with working knowledge of ArcGIS.
Physical Requirements
- At least 21 years old with a 3-year driving history.
- Ability to conduct moderate to strenuous physical activity in the field and lift up to 70 pounds.
- Willing and able to work outdoors in all weather conditions at all times of year.
- Must pass a pre-employment drug test and background screening.
